The storming of the Bastille on 14 July, 1789 marked the beginning ofthe French revolution . The monarchy fell in 1791 and soon a coalition ofnine neighboring states declared war on the new republic in an effort torestore the monarchy. Early French setbacks were soon reversed and by theend of 1793 the allies were pushed back east of the Rhine; Alsace and thePalati nate were ceded to France and Mainz was recaptured. Among theforemost French military leader s was Napoleon Bonaparte. In early 1796the 26 year old Napoleon was placed in command of the entire French army.
That same year, French troops invaded the Upper Rhine. The entireRhine valley, Württembe rg, Franconia and Bavaria were occupied. Theenemy troops "descended upon the German populace like swarms of hungrywolves. The contributions and requisitionings were terrible. The soldiers abused the land to the utmost: I blush with shame to lead an armythat behaves in such a n unworthy manner ...", wrote General Jourdan. In1799 Napoleon staged a coup d'etat and wa s made First Counsel withnearly dictatorial powers.
On 9 February, 1801 peace was concluded with Austria at Lunéville. The accord set, among other things, the Rhine River, from Switzerland tothe Netherlands, as the eastern boundary of France. The results of aplebescite in 1802 made Napoleon First Counsul for life and in May of1804 he was elected Emperor. The year 1805 saw the formation of the ThirdCoalition by Great Britain, Russia, Austria, Sweden and the Kingdom ofNaples with the goal to forc e France back behind its former borders. Onthe same day, October 20, the French defeated th e Austrians at Ulm,Admiral Nelson defeated the French fleet at Trafalgar. In July, 1806 sixteen German states formed the Confederation of the Rhine, with Napoleon asprotector. Under th is protectorate, several areas northeast andsouthwest of Kirn were ceded to Baden in 1803, encompassing the towns ofHenau, Schwarzerden and Weitersborn. The years 1800-1810 ushered in hardtimes and the men were conscripted into the French Army. Many young menforsook their fatherland to escape military service and are found in thelists of emigration.

Info was gotten from LDS records of Erlenbach in 1984 . I also believethat since Michael doesn't show up on any census info, that most likelyhe died on the Wiest's trek to Russia where they arrived in Oct 1809. HMW

One article I read said that close to 50% of the immigrants died in routeor at Ismail. There thousands of people buried near this city. [perGarvin Bertsch][Harold M Wiest 2.FTW]

Comments: Ages given are for the census year 1816.
All the Wiest families appear to have come from Erlenbach/Rheinpfalz.They were probably all related somehow. It would appear that there wereoriginally three pioneer families: FRANZ, SEBASTIAN, and a third man(father of Daniel and Peter) whose name however remains unknown.

Peter married Ms. Catharina Wiest.

Sebastian died before 1840, because at Elisabetha's death she is listedas the widow of Sebastian. Most likely Sebastian died before 1830. HMW
